I have been asked by so many friends from back home how they can easily get in touch with me. Since I have moved to China from the United States, communication is not as easy as it used to be.
Back in the United States, we would simply call on the phone. For friends and family that were further away in the States not wanting to rack up those long distance charges, we would Facebook.
Here in China, Facebook is blocked unless we use a VPN service. These VPN’s are never reliably stable. More often than not, signal is lost and needs to be reconnected. A virtual pain in the @$$.
Email is slow. One side writes and sends. The other side gets the email and responds. Most times not until a day later, since China and the United States are on opposite sides of the planet, one side or the other is sleeping.
Meaning it would be the next day, when one or the other checks their email a response can be given. Sort of like sending a message to Mars and waiting for a reply.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to communicate instantly, anywhere in the world? Not only text messaging but face to face, live?
Well you can.
Here in China we use a free service called WeChat. It works both with a data connection and through Wi-Fi from your mobile device. Live, instant text messages and video calls are the norm with WeChat.
And like Facebook, there is a social share. You can post your life updates as you would on Facebook to your “Moments” page for any of your friends to see.
