Guilin was named after the fragrance of the Osmanthus Tree. The city boasts a long history that can be traced back for 10,000 years. Guilin was not brought into the official prefecture until 214 B.C. when the first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.-206 B.C.) set up the Guilin Shire in this region. At the same time, due to the construction of the Ling Canal, this place became one of the gateways between the Central Plains and the Lingnan Region (current Guangdong, Guangxi and part Hunan, Jiangxi). Later, in 111 of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), the Shian County was founded in Guilin.

Guilin’s Location:

24.20N to 26.07N, 109.61E to 111.24E; South China, northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China, situated on the west bank of the Li River and bordering Hunan to the north. It has an area of 10,737 sq. miles (27,809 km²).

Guilin’s Reputation:

Guilin’s reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful places has been established over hundreds of years and its idyllic scenery draws tourists from near and far by the hundreds of thousands every year. The popular Chinese saying, "Guilin shanshui jia tian xia" means; “Guilin’s mountain and water scenery is the best under heaven”. They believe that this place is second to none.
